The Task
The design and documentation of a new bulk material handling system including a new skipway for bulk materials (and associated structures), bins and hoppers and a skip and unloading mechanism with a 185m run, 103m lift and 15t skip tonnage.

The project involved the design of a winch drawn skip, which was pulled up a skip way traversing heavily wooded and steep terrain.  When the skip reached the top of the slope it was tipped over and the bulk materials were unloaded onto a truck through a discharge chute.

Our Role
Lindsay Design was appointed Lead Engineering Designer and chose a steel frame option for the skipway, as environmental constraints required the full dismantling of the facility once the mine is exhausted.  A winch drawn skipway proved to be an efficient system for the transfer of bulk materials up the very steep slope, over 45º in places.

The trestles were supported onto small concrete pads secured by rock anchors.  Finite Element Analysis was carried out on the winch tower, loading / unloading hoppers and the skip itself.  Site work requirements were minimised by using prefabricated steel frames.
