The Task
BHP Billiton proposed to increase the production rate of the operating Mt Arthur mine.  The upgrade required increased throughput via coal handling structures as well as at each of the existing preparation plant's three modules.  The assignment was to design a structure that enabled the upgrade of Run of Mine (ROM), surge and purge bin infrastructure, including conveyors, as well as accommodating the changes in the preparation plant processes developed by Downer EDI Engineering.

Our Role
Lindsay Dynan’s solution involved a combination of structural steel framework and suspended concrete structures.  All structural arrangements were developed considering the key client requirement of minimal disruption to the existing facility and operations.  The coal preparation plant structural arrangement was developed to enable the ongoing operation of two out of the three modules at any time. 

All structural upgrades were completed successfully, achieving vibration performance as defined by client brief.  The completed coal handling surface operation achieved the desired outcome of increased output.
