The Task and Our Role
Following a fire which caused irreparable damage to the original building, we worked with architects and builders to construct a bold, innovative and stylish building for the MBA’s new regional headquarters.

Site constraints included potential flood issues associated with the sizeable stormwater drainage channel running on the West side, as well as a two-storey Day Hospital on the East side boundary wall, creating a need to the reduce noise and vibrations during construction.  There was limited crane access and the original footings and floor slabs, which were left in place, needed to be incorporated.

We submitted various structural schemes for cost comparison and an entire steel frame and metal deck solution was chosen over reinforced or post-tensioned concrete due to the ability to erect the steel frame in one stage from footing to roof and clad the roof early in the construction sequence.  Floor slabs were supported on composite steel and concrete beams using a 7m grid spacing.  The use of Onesteel Trusdek II permanent metal deck formwork overcame the need for temporary propping.

The building is a shining example of the efficient use of materials.  The remnants of the original building were successfully incorporated and design efficiency and innovation ensured that the building was sustainable.

The tight construction program was met and the project was completed under budget.  The building even increased the yield for the site by incorporating a third level of rental office space.  It makes a bold statement at the gateway to the commercial precincts of Newcastle.
