John has over 10 years’ experience in construction and consulting and has been responsible for delivering a vast range of civil/structural engineering projects ranging from small residential to $400M + infrastructure works. John recognises that client engagement and stakeholder communication are key to successful delivery and he employs this philosophy when managing projects that require large in-house and multi-disciplinary sub-consultant teams.  Key Projects include:

  • Mater Hospital Re-Development  - $170M extension and refurbishment of Newcastle’s Mater Hospital.
  • The Royal Complex Newcastle Beach - $80M construction of one 16 Storey and two 8 storey commercial/residential buildings.
  • Sapphire to Woolgoolga Bypass – Temporary works for the $470M Pacific Highway upgrade.
  • Jacksons Landing – 25 Storey Post tensioned concrete commercial/residential building at Darling Harbour.
  • MAC Village Mining Camp – Cyclone shelter and 1300 bed mining camp in Karratha.
  • Broome Air Traffic Control Tower – Designed for post disaster function, the facility included a fire station and air traffic viewing tower.

John’s broad experience across the residential, commercial, industrial, mining, road and rail sectors has resulted in highly developed design skills that allow him to provide constructible, cost effective solutions to complex problems. Some specialist areas of expertise include:

  • Durability assessment, life-cycle performance and cost optimisation
  • Material/product testing and certification
  • Temporary works engineering
  • Post disaster ‘make-safe’ engineering

Holding a PhD in reliability based structural optimisation, John has presented his work at conferences both in Australia and overseas and has a large body of work published in international structural journals. John maintains links with the University of Newcastle through ongoing involvement in lecturing and research.
