Finite Element Analysis

The Task
The task was the structural design and documentation of a Train Load Out (TLO) facility including 1500 tonne surge bin, 100 tonne weigh bin and associated steel support tower.

Our Role
Lindsay Dynan was engaged for the structural design and production of engineering drawings for a new Train Load Out (TLO) facility at Caval Ridge, Queensland.

We undertook the primary design of the surge bin and weigh bin using the Finite Element Analysis and Modelling software Strand7. Due to the high number of load repetitions, it was important to consider the effects of fatigue. This was further complicated by challenging material load patterns associated with the 4 way hopper and large dynamic loads associated with a high material discharge rate falling into the weigh bin. There were also various construction issues that needed to be overcome, particularly with fabrication, transport and bolting of the various segments. Many of the bolted connections were checked using Strand7 to efficiently determine the required bolt sizes and spacing required.
